ITwin Dongle Splits in Two, Connects Remote Computers 17th Sep 2011

ITwin Dongle Splits in Two, Connects Remote Computers

One thing that our computers are still comically bad at is sharing large files between each other. You want to send a birthday movie to your mother? Good luck. E-mail is hopeless for large files and sharing services are too complicated. Your best (and fastest) bet is to burn the files to a DVD and mail it.

ITwin is an attempt to fix this, although it comes with its own problems.

Folding Bike Concept Probably Inspired By Shopping Cart, Stationary Cycle 7th Sep 2011

Folding Bike Concept Probably Inspired By Shopping Cart, Stationary Cycle

Good lord! What on Earth were Weiche Wu and Minhan Lin thinking when they came up with this absurd concept. design for a folding bike? Perhaps the goal was to make a bike so tall and with a wheelbase so short that only a child with very long legs (think Kermit, only human) could ride it? Or perhaps they planned on making a bike that could be made to look like a golf cart when folded?

I’ll settle on my favorite theory: that they simply allowed a shopping cart and an stationary bike interbreed.

Sony HUD Specs Show Subtitles to Cinemagoers 6th Sep 2011

Sony HUD Specs Show Subtitles to Cinemagoers

Sony has an experimental pair of spectacles that will allow cinemagoers to see on-screen subtitles, even when none are being projected. The specs are for use primarily by the deaf and hard-of-hearing, and use LEDs to provide a heads-up display, superimposed over the movie. The words appear to the eye to be the same distance away as the movie screen, just like any other HUD.

Lenovo Debuts Low-Cost Tablet and Skinny Laptops 31st Aug 2011

Lenovo Debuts Low-Cost Tablet and Skinny Laptops

Lenovo announced their newest tablet, the IdeaPad A1, which will undercut the competition with a starting price of $200.

The A1 tablet will run Android version 2.3 (Gingerbread), feature both front and back-facing cameras, Wi-Fi connectivity and all of the typical tablet accoutrements. Unique to Lenovo, the tablet will feature offline GPS, which connects directly to a satellite feed rather than through the wireless network. Like Lenovo’s other tablets, the A1 supports apps from both the Lenovo app market, and the Android store.

The A1 follows alongside three other tablets just released by Lenovo, which we reviewed last month.

For those who miss the comfort of a keyboard and a Microsoft OS, Lenovo is also releasing its U Series of laptops, including the U300s which comes in an ultra-slim, MacBook Air-like profile. The IdeaPad  U300s has a solid-state hard drive, and weighs in at .01 kg.

Adobe CreatePDF for iPad 28th Aug 2011

Adobe CreatePDF for iPad

Aside from the bloated carcass that is Photoshop, and the CPU-taxing nightmare that is Flash, Adobe is also known for the slimline, efficient and easy to use Acrobat and Acrobat Reader, applications for authoring and reading PDF files. Who am I kidding? Acrobat is pretty much the most complicated, slow and cumbersome way to do anything with a PDF, which is why I’m skeptical that Adobe’s CreatePDF for iOS will even work.

The $10 universal app takes files of many formats and converts them to a PDF.

Innowave Is a Microwave Oven in a Drawer

Innowave is a concept design for a microwave oven from Anoush Mortazavi. Instead of taking up yet more countertop space, his microwave fits inside a standard 600mm-wide drawer, sliding out when you need it.

The unit has a glass lid which flips open for access, the oven has a turntable-less design, and the controls are placed along the top edge of the front panel.

Elastick iPad Mic Stand Invites Puerile Jokes 15th Aug 2011

Elastick iPad Mic Stand Invites Puerile Jokes

The object you see above is a strap-on. A strap-on stand for the iPad, that is. Here it is in action:

It’s called the Elastick, and is an iPad stand for musicians. The four loops hook around the corners of the tablet and the phallic proboscis will either support it like a kickstand, or slot into any microphone holder you might find on stage. This is smart, as history has already design a mic stand to fit pretty much any situation.

The Elastick isn’t limited to the iPad, either, or even just tablets in general.

Sprint Says ‘No Thanks’ to 4G BlackBerry PlayBook

Updated 5:17 P.M. PST with comment from RIM

RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook tablet just can’t catch a break.

Sprint announced Friday that it will not be selling a 4G version of the PlayBook on its Wi-Max network.

“We apologize for any inconvenience but the BlackBerry 4G PlayBook Tablet that was announced in January for summer availability will no longer be coming to the Sprint network,” a Sprint representative told Wired.com in a statement. “This was a mutual decision between Sprint and RIM.”

The news was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
